News flash moving day in Quebec has just got crazier for Quebecers. Landlords have started to demand that their tenants be out by June 30th midnight when their leases are officially over and we know that they will not be allowing you to move in at 12:01 am on July 1st when your lease officially begins. This may or not be happening to you, but it is happening and is going to cause one unholy mess on moving day, not to mention extra costs to people moving. If your landlord is trying to do this to you do not comply and passively resist this insane change in the rules that makes no sense.
The Governments Quebec are either not aware of this new developement or are waiting to see what happens as usual. They watch as we are gouged by rental increase after rental increase that do not conform to the guidelines and now this. This is shaping up to be the most chaotic moving day of all times. The new rule for some if not all has some people doing one thing and others doing something else where timing and everyone doing the same thing makes for a smooth move. Under the new rules a person must start to move on June 30th about 6-8 pm at night and move in by midnight depending on how much stuff they have. Does this make sense to you in the government of Quebec and Montreal?
What landlord in Montreal, or in all of Quebec is going to let the new tenant move out or in during the night and wee hours of the morning and is there not a by law prohibiting the noise one can make during certain hours? If you can’t move in or out after a certain time where is your furniture supposed to go during the 12 hour gap between your loading and moving out by 9pm and your being allowed to move in say 9am?Are you supposed to leave it on the truck at $50 per hour for every hour you are late? This is what UHaul charges and they are not the most expensive by a long shot.
No professional mover will hold your stuff over night for free so who is supposed to pay for storage and the unloading and reloading of you furniture for the 12 hours. Where are the people moving supposed to stay for this time? As a matter of fact, just try to get a profesional mover to move you starting at 6pm; good luck and do not hold your breath while trying, or waiting for that crew.
What are the landlords and the governments thinking about. This is going to be one stupid day. A day full of tension and displacement. Families will be left on the street and movers will be putting their clients furniture on the street when they run out of money to continue waiting charges. There are not enough trucks first of all to handle moving day in this manner. I do not think that anyone will want to pay for hotels for them and their families, because of this totally idiotic and ill-conceived plan by the landlords and governments. I would say the less money you have the more this will hurt you, because it will be you who can not afford to the extra cost involved.
No legitimate moving company is set to move its clients during the night it is just not done except in extreme emergency. There will be arguments about noise as people try to comply at both ends of the move. There will be no place to park because people not moving will be parked in the spots, trying to sleep so that they can get up and go to work in the morning. People are going to be displaced, confused and very angry.
How many people do you expect to go to work? None I hope? Quebec should become the 1st Province to declare june 30th to July 2nd paid National Moving Days to help defray the cost of moving. Bring in your receipt for moving and your new lease and get your days pay which the government will refund to your boss.
We know this will not happen so what you must do is resist passively. In other word do not comply, but do it without violence! Move out and in at the time you have scheduled in the past. Everyone load your furniture in the morning and be out by noon the latest. Fight this stupid rule that makes no sense and benefits no one. Start asking about this at your city hall, call them block up their phones and make them listen to you. Start giving your ministers and all politicians emails and phone calls block up their phone lines until they do something. Start calling the press, start making some noise. Maybe everyone moving should go sleep on the steps of your city hall or on the steps of every government building until they realise your coming inconvenience and stupidity of the situation and act on this new moving developement. What you do not want to do is comply, because you will have nowhere to go with your furniture or family.
Maybe the press could pick this up? I know that lately your version of a community interest story tends to lead more towards scandals and who is sleeping with who, but could you for once do something real for real people?
If you think I am kidding think again, I have friends who have been asked to sign the moving out waiver and it definitely states that they the landlords expect you out by June 30th midnight.
