2. a state having such a form of government: The United States and Canada are democracies.
3. a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges.
Or is it a leader who obtains power by means of appeals to the emotions and prejudices of the populace?
Is it not ironic that we live in what is supposed to be a democratic country part of a democratic commonwealth of nations and we keep doing non democratic things in our own country and in others in our efforts to show the non democratic nations of the world the benefits of living in a democratic society. It makes me wonder of all of the versions, explanations and definitions of democracy that I have heard and read of, has democracy died and a new political creature been created and now being forced down the throats of our population as democracy.
Democracy is supposed to mean that a government is acting on the desires and needs voiced by its people through its population voting on leaders in fair elections. The population listens to their leaders in debates, speeches and promises set out in the candidates platform and then votes for the person whose platform matches their needs wishes and direction they think the country should be headed and best suits their personal needs as well. The political party with the most votes is deemed to represent the most of the population and therefore is representative of the country. this does not mean that the rest of the population can be forgotten, or that they can be ignored, or persecuted for not voting for the winner.
As I look at what is going on in the so-called governments of the “Democratic Countries“, of the world at home and outside of their countries, I see democratic governments by virtue of the vote only and even this is a sham. What the candidates say means nothing and they for years have taken away the power of the people a little at a time to the point where they openly tell the population to leave the governing to them and that we do not know the intricacies of governing a country.
For instance we the people are only now entitled to know the truth as decided by the politicians. In other words in order to run the country effectively the government finds that it is necessary to lie to its population and the world about just about everything and for just about all things. From financing a bridge to going to war the government of democratic countries are continually telling their people that they will be as transparent as possible, but most things must remain blacked out in public reports to protect us from danger, to protect us from economic down fall and to protect us from ourselves.
Is it necessary at all to deny access to information about our role in wars carried out in the name of our country, or which means us the people of Canada? I think not. Is it necessary to withhold information on the condition of a bridge commissioned by the government? I think not. Is it necessary to with hold any information that a population asks of its elected government of the people , or deny access to for any reason by a supposedly democratic country? I still say that I do not think so, because all of this being done supposedly for us and in our name, with our resources and our lives and the lives of our children and families future hanging in the balance.
All over the world people banded together in financial districts to protest the imbalance in the way the worlds resources, wealth and chance for a better life are divided and shared between the 99% of the have-nots, the haves and the 1% of the super rich and their governments decided to ignore them for a while and hoped that they would go away. Not one rogue country, but all of the so-called democratic countries in the world told these people that what they were talking about did not matter. That what the wanted did not count and that they did not understand what it was to govern a country and they should realize just how lucky they were to be allowed to protest in this manner and stop all the complaining. What is the purpose of living in a democracy if what you say means nothing? Countries, provinces, states and cities all over the world are moving to close down , or make it difficult to protest in the wall street type takeovers and redefining what it means to live in a democracy, in fact they are redefining democracy itself and it looks a lot like dictatorship to me, or a Russian type democracy. Come out vote for me or for me, then go home do what your told or go to jail or worse.
The right to strike and to protest is being wiped out in Canada for our own good it is said, because us the 99% that makes this country tick do not understand that we have to keep our demands for fair salaries and benefits for our work down so that the executives that hire us feel it is worthwhile to keep operating by maintaining huge salaries, big bonuses and grand pensions at the end of their careers.I think we are all beginning to see in Canada and all over the world that simply voting a government into office does not a democracy make. Simply having the right to vote for your leader does not mean that you will get equal representation on key issues related to your ability to live and function within your society.
When the honesty went out of the political game and people began to expect and accept politicians for liars instead of forcing them to tell the truth, we the people of the democratic states began giving up our power to influence our government through the vote. the government no longer works for the people in works in spite of the people. Our political leaders give us White papers, Blue Papers and Red Papers, which are booklets mapping out for us what the party intends to do for us if we allow them the privilege of working for us in the governance of this country, but the truth is that the papers are not worth spit, because never has the documents ever been meant to actually guide the government. when Jean Chretien was called on the carpet for not following his Liberal Red Paper he said, “Things change “
The Harper government won an election based on balancing the budget by 2015, through lies, half-truths and holding back of information. Now it appears that they will not be able to meet their dead line for balancing the budget and become just another party to get elected saying one thing and doing another.
It is also quite clear that in this new democracy that the 1% of the worlds richest people and biggest companies, banks and industries will share all of the power riches and resources of the world and that the vote the world’s population no longer guarantees democracy, but rather giving us the vote is meant to placate the pain of it, like giving a lollypop to a child after a visit to the dentist, by the dentist.
